Dental Anxiety

Dental Anxiety and EMDR Therapy

Do you avoid the dentist due to anxiety? You are not alone. Many people suffer from dental anxiety, and it is important to emphasize that it is nothing to be ashamed of.

The good news is that it can typically be treated in just a few sessions with us. With the right treatment, you can regain control and feel safe again.

Dental anxiety, also called odontophobia, is a fear of going to the dentist. Some experience it as mild nervousness, but for others, it is a definite phobia that makes a visit to the dentist impossible.

Dental anxiety often stems from previous negative experiences, where one, for example, experienced painful treatment or loss of control. Most often, it is a single trauma that has become stuck in the consciousness, and the thoughts can be worse than the actual visit.

EMDR helps process traumatic or anxiety-provoking experiences associated with dental visits. This form of therapy works with the brain’s natural ability to process and “reprogram” difficult experiences.

The treatment consists of several steps, where a psychologist guides you through previous negative experiences, while simultaneously experiencing stimulations such as eye movements, sounds in alternating ears, or light taps on the hands.
