Who is Psykologhuset Enigma?

The word Enigma means riddle. It is also the name of a machine developed by the Germans during World War II for communication. All messages were hidden behind a code that was almost impossible to crack, as it was changed daily, requiring one to start over every day.

However, the British succeeded in assembling a special team that, through their diverse skills and combined ways of thinking, solved the riddle and cracked the code. This is exactly what we strive to do at Psykologhuset Enigma. We are a psychological practice with many different psychological directions and mindsets under one roof. This means that when you contact us, we have the opportunity to point you toward the psychologist we believe will be the right match to help you with the issue you are facing. The fact that we have a breadth of psychological expertise in-house also means you are guaranteed that your psychologist has competent sparring within reach, can see things from new perspectives, and has the option to involve another psychologist or therapeutic approach if that proves to be the best path forward for you. This is your guarantee for effective and quality treatment.

We are proud of our name and take pride in living up to it. We hope that you will feel well-received and safely guided through your search for the answer to exactly what you bring to us.

Cognitive therapy focuses on changing the content of your thoughts (are they true?). Metacognitive therapy focuses on changing your relationship to those thoughts (is it useful to spend time on them?). Both are effective, but MCT is particularly beneficial if you struggle with repetitive rumination and worry.

Psykologhuset Enigma is a private clinic, and we do not accept doctor’s referrals under the Danish Public Health Insurance. However, you can often receive reimbursement from Sygeforsikringen Danmark or your private health insurance.

How does couples therapy work?2026-10-05T11:54:40+02:00

Couples therapy always begins by mapping out the couple’s current life situation and their goals for the process. We help you identify the entrenched patterns and dynamics that create conflict between you. For some couples, all sessions are conducted together, while in other cases, it proves relevant to work with the partners individually in parallel. This enables each partner to examine their own reaction patterns and the underlying factors. Regardless of the approach, the therapy will help you develop a common language and a new understanding of both your partner and your mutual interaction.

How Can a Child Psychologist Help?2026-10-05T11:54:36+02:00

Child psychologists are experts in supporting children through many aspects of their development. In addition to helping children with everyday stress and worries, we can also assist in situations involving behavioral problems, learning disabilities, or emotional disorders.

As child psychologists, we can also provide guidance to families when social dilemmas, school changes, bullying, or traumatic events occur in a child’s life. Whether it involves providing tools to manage daily challenges or deeper therapeutic work for serious psychological issues, a child psychologist is trained to help the child and their family find a way forward.

How Does a Child Psychologist Work?2026-10-05T11:54:50+02:00

A child psychologist focuses on children but often also works with the parents who are responsible for the child, and considers other relationships the child encounters or misses in their daily life. As child psychologists, we therefore examine these relationships, and at other times, we delve deeply into the complex processes that affect children’s mental, emotional, and social development.

We utilize a combination of talk therapy, play, and observational methods to better understand the child’s world. Through these techniques, child psychologists can identify and address specific challenges the child may be experiencing, whether they are emotional difficulties, behavioral problems, or social dilemmas.

By working closely with children, their families, and other professionals, child psychologists ensure that each child receives the support they need.

What are the symptoms of ADHD in men?2026-10-05T11:57:36+02:00

More visible symptoms such as impulsivity and hyperactivity are seen more frequently in men than in women. Men with ADHD often appear more active, externalizing, and aggressive than women. These psychological differences may help explain why most hyperactive children with ADHD are boys, and why far more boys than girls are diagnosed during childhood.

While girls with ADHD often internalize their emotions and may develop depression and anxiety, men have a greater tendency to manage their difficult emotions through the use of substances such as alcohol and drugs, and are thus at a higher risk of developing an addiction.

What are the symptoms of ADHD in women?2026-10-05T11:56:58+02:00

There is no evidence to suggest that there is a fundamental difference between ADHD in men and women; however, there are certain biological and cultural differences between the two genders that can influence how ADHD manifests in men and women.

Women with ADHD experience internal chaos more often than men and may mask their symptoms. They may have a tendency to be more quiet and introverted with their attention disorder, resulting in their difficulties going unnoticed or their symptoms being misinterpreted. Consequently, many women are diagnosed later in life than men. Some women with ADHD also describe setting very high standards for themselves and experiencing a significant degree of self-criticism.

How are adults evaluated for ADHD?2026-10-05T11:57:07+02:00

Adults are evaluated for ADHD by a psychiatrist or a psychologist specializing in testing and assessment. You can pay for this yourself at a private clinic, or you can obtain a referral from your primary care physician to a psychiatrist. The latter is free of charge; however, you should expect a very long waiting period.

The evaluation process usually consists of a thorough interview regarding your symptoms and difficulties throughout your life, potentially including statements or participation from close relatives. In addition, the psychiatrist will observe you during the interview (how you sit, speak, concentrate, etc.) and provide you with questionnaires to complete. Based on the interview, observation, and questionnaires, the psychiatrist or psychologist will determine whether a diagnosis should be made.

How Hereditary Is ADHD?2026-10-05T11:55:34+02:00

ADHD has a high degree of heritability. Twin studies attribute 80% of the causes of ADHD to genetic factors. This means that some parents or other family members of children and adolescents with ADHD themselves have ADHD or ADHD-like challenges.

What Are the Early Signs of ADHD?2026-10-05T11:56:23+02:00

Parents and caregivers often ask how ADHD can be identified in childhood. Some early signs may include challenges with attention and hyperactivity. This can manifest as significant motor restlessness that is difficult to control, and impulsive actions and decisions. It may also involve difficulties following instructions, listening attentively, and concentrating on schoolwork or play for extended periods. Some parents of children with ADHD also describe that, from a very early age, the child struggled to regulate themselves, meaning they cried a lot, had difficulty eating, struggled to settle down and sleep, and were particularly sensitive to stimuli from sight, hearing, and touch.

Children without ADHD can also experience the aforementioned challenges at various times in their lives, and these can be entirely normal for children. Therefore, during a diagnostic process, it is important to note that the difficulties must have been present for a long time, that they affect the child’s functional level, and that they occur in multiple areas of the child’s life, for example, both in a daycare or preschool setting and at home.

How do you get tested for ADHD?2026-10-05T11:57:15+02:00

There is no specific test, scan, or examination that can determine whether or not you have ADHD. The diagnosis is made based on an assessment of the difficulties you experience, observations of you, and a series of questions where you indicate the extent to which you recognize the symptoms mentioned in the questionnaire. The diagnosis is made by a psychiatrist or a psychologist specializing in testing and assessment.

What Causes ADHD?2026-10-05T11:55:30+02:00

Research shows that the causes of ADHD are numerous and complex, involving an interaction between genetic and environmental factors. There is a strong hereditary component in the development of ADHD, but influences during pregnancy (smoking, alcohol, illness) as well as premature birth, birth complications, or head trauma are also believed to play a role in its development.

What does ADHD stand for?2026-10-05T11:57:40+02:00

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and is a neuropsychiatric disorder that presents children, adolescents, and adults with challenges regarding attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

There is also a form of ADHD where hyperactivity is absent or invisible, and where attention is primarily what is challenged. This is often called “quiet ADHD” and is in many places referred to as ADD or ADHD with a predominant presentation of inattentiveness. In this case, the person has the same attention difficulties as with ADHD, but hyperactivity is absent or often occurs on a cognitive level in the form of mental stress and racing thoughts.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?2026-10-05T11:55:45+02:00

A psychologist has a university degree in psychology, whereas a psychiatrist has a university degree in medicine. A psychiatrist is, therefore, a medical doctor.

Consequently, a psychiatrist can prescribe medication, while a psychologist cannot. A psychologist is trained to understand human behavior, thoughts, and emotions and will generally treat mental illness therapeutically, whereas a psychiatrist is trained to diagnose and medicate. In certain cases, it is beneficial to receive concurrent treatment from both a psychologist and a psychiatrist.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?2026-10-05T11:55:51+02:00

The biggest difference between psychologists and psychotherapists is the level of education. The education to become a psychologist always takes 5 years at university (full-time), where students are introduced to many branches of psychology and gain a thorough and broad understanding of the psyche and human beings before learning to conduct therapy.

Psychotherapist training programs can vary greatly, but what they have in common is that they focus on learning to conduct therapy and are typically taken as weekend courses. The title ‘psychotherapist’ is not protected.

How long does it take to become a psychologist?2026-10-05T11:55:56+02:00

It takes 5 years to become a psychologist (cand.psych.). After this, it takes a minimum of 2 years to become a licensed psychologist.

This is achieved by receiving 160 hours of supervision from a more experienced psychologist. The supervision involves presenting and receiving feedback on one’s own work with various client groups.

How can a psychologist help?2026-10-05T11:58:03+02:00

A psychologist can help you move forward in areas where you feel stuck. This can apply to conditions such as depression, anxiety, addiction, stress, and PTSD, as well as more diffuse issues like an identity crisis, sleep problems, or low self-esteem.

A psychologist can also help couples and families improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships.

Why See a Psychologist?2026-10-05T11:56:07+02:00

Many people seek a psychologist’s help to manage mental health challenges. These can include anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, trauma, or other psychological disorders. A psychologist can help you identify the causes of your challenges, develop new coping strategies, and find your way to improved mental well-being.

However, a psychologist can also be instrumental in achieving increased self-understanding, personal growth, and development, both individually and within your close relationships.

What is a Psychologist?2026-10-05T11:56:13+02:00

A psychologist is an individual who has completed a master’s degree in psychology. The psychology program encompasses many different perspectives on understanding people, and psychologists can therefore specialize in various areas, such as brain research, learning and pedagogy, child development, trauma, management, etc. Psychologists who help people through talk therapy are called clinical psychologists.

What is the Cost of Seeing a Psychologist?2026-10-05T12:13:07+02:00

The cost of seeing a psychologist who operates outside the public health system (without a provider number) can depend on many factors, including your location and whether the psychologist is authorized.

At Psykologhuset Enigma, a therapy session costs 1,295 kr, and all psychologists are authorized.

If you are a member of Sygeforsikringen Danmark, they may provide a subsidy. If you have private health insurance, you may also use it if it allows for a free choice of psychologist.
