Dental Anxiety

Dental Anxiety and EMDR Therapy

Do you avoid the dentist due to anxiety? You are not alone. Many people suffer from dental anxiety, and it is important to emphasize that it is nothing to be ashamed of.

The good news is that it can typically be treated in just a few sessions with us. With the right treatment, you can regain control and feel safe again.

Dental anxiety, also called odontophobia, is a fear of going to the dentist. Some experience it as mild nervousness, but for others, it is a definite phobia that makes a visit to the dentist impossible.

Dental anxiety often stems from previous negative experiences, where one, for example, experienced painful treatment or loss of control. Most often, it is a single trauma that has become stuck in the consciousness, and the thoughts can be worse than the actual visit.

EMDR Therapy for Dental Anxiety

At Psykologhuset Enigma, we use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for dental anxiety. EMDR is a recognized treatment method originally developed to treat PTSD. Experience showed that it is also particularly effective in treating phobias and anxiety – including dental anxiety.

EMDR helps process traumatic or anxiety-provoking experiences associated with dental visits. This form of therapy works with the brain’s natural ability to process and “reprogram” difficult experiences.

The treatment consists of several steps, where a psychologist guides you through previous negative experiences, while simultaneously experiencing stimulations such as eye movements, sounds in alternating ears, or light taps on the hands. Read more about EMDR therapy here.

Steps in EMDR Treatment for Dental Anxiety

  • Identification of the Trauma
Together, we identify the experience(s) that created the fear – for example, a painful dental treatment or an unpleasant dental experience from childhood.

  • Activation of the Trauma in a Controlled Environment
You focus on the unpleasant experience while we apply EMDR stimulation. This helps to make your emotional reaction less intense.

  • Restructuring the Experience
During the sessions, the brain learns to perceive the old experience in a more neutral or positive way, so it no longer creates dental anxiety.

  • Embedding Positive Thoughts
We work to replace negative feelings with new and more constructive beliefs such as: “I feel safe in the dentist’s chair” or “I can handle the dental visit.”

  • Testing Reactions in Reality
Once we have processed your dental anxiety, you can think about the dentist without feeling discomfort and anxiety. You are now ready to go to the dentist again.

For many, it is reassuring to know that the dentist specializes in dental anxiety and has both patience and understanding for those who have had difficult experiences before or have not been to the dentist for a long time.

We recommend Hasselbalch & Ditlev dentists who prioritize creating the best possible environment for you with dental anxiety.
