Psychologist for young people

Psychologist for young people – many youth are struggling

Many young people experience a need for help in sharing their thoughts and feelings, which is why we have a special focus as psychologists for youth. Being young can be a challenging time, where one must not only find their way between being their own person and their parents’ child, but also navigate a range of other influences that impact life.

A study from 2021 showed that young people between the ages of 16 and 24 are the age group struggling the most mentally. These are concerning figures that we must take seriously.

Many young people seek a psychologist because they experience some form of dissatisfaction or distress. For some, it involves specific causes, such as:

For others, the problems are rooted in a more general feeling of being uneasy and having difficulty coping with pressure, demands, and expectations from the outside world. Regardless of what it looks like for you, we would like to help you move forward.

Psychologist for young people – get help understanding your emotions

As a young person, you and your surroundings are in constant flux. Your body and your emotions can be overwhelming, with strong and unfamiliar reactions. At the same time, expectations from the adults around you increase, and it can feel as if they both expect more and interfere too much in what you do.

Your social life – with friends, partners, and online communities – takes up a lot of space, and it becomes important to feel accepted both in reality and on social media. You may be influenced by influencers who show a perfect image of life with money, parties, and success, which can make you feel that your life is lacking something. Perhaps you feel like you are missing out when you see your friends’ stories, or you become absorbed in counting likes and followers. This constant comparison can take the focus away from being present in the moment.

It is natural that youth can be both exciting and confusing. Many of the feelings and thoughts you experience are completely normal, but sometimes they can become so challenging that you need help. A psychologist can help you understand which thoughts and feelings are normal and which may require extra support.

The ways you learn to handle challenges as a young person often follow you into adulthood. It can therefore be a great strength to get help now to develop healthy strategies for tackling difficult times. Once you have learned to overcome challenges, you are better equipped the next time life offers resistance.

We always take your experiences as our starting point. Through conversation, we help you find your strengths and your way forward. If you live at home and it makes sense, we involve your parents in the therapy so they can also support you as best as possible. This can create a safe framework and provide a shared understanding of how they can support your well-being.

When the therapy process eventually concludes, you will not stand alone – your parents and surroundings can help you maintain the positive development we have created together.

For you as a parent

At Psykologhuset Enigma, we have short wait times.

When we meet young people, we always do so on their terms. Our goal is to create a safe and confidential space where they can open up about what is on their minds. At the same time, we recognize that you, as a parent, have an important role. When deemed beneficial, you can therefore be involved in the therapy in a way that supports both your child and the therapeutic process.

We know that concern for your child does not disappear just because they get older. It is painful to see one’s child struggling, and it can be difficult to accept that there are things your child does not wish to share with you. At the same time, it can feel challenging to let go of control and trust that your child will find their own way through the difficulties.

Fortunately, we have experience in creating the fine balance between confidentiality and parental involvement, which we know is necessary to create change. We know how important it is for young people to have their own private space to speak freely – also about what feels confusing or shameful. At the same time, we work to strengthen the conversation and trust between you, so that change does not only happen in the therapy room but also comes home into everyday life.

While your teenager is in a session with us, you are welcome to take a walk in the area or relax in the waiting room with a cup of coffee or tea.
