Psychological Support During Fertility Treatment
People react differently to a fertility journey.
Some experience periods of great optimism and hope. Others feel stress, sadness, anger, low self-esteem, worry, or a sense that life has been put on pause. And often, these feelings shift along the way.
At times, fertility treatment can come to occupy almost everything. The calendar is organized around treatments, and thoughts about pregnancy, test results, and the next attempt can be difficult to set aside.
In these moments, psychological sessions can help create a sanctuary and assist you in regaining a foothold in the parts of life you can actually influence.
How Can a Psychologist Help During Fertility Treatment?
Psychological support does not change the outcome of the fertility treatment itself.
Instead, the purpose is to help you manage the psychological burden that the treatment process can entail.
A course of therapy can, among other things, help you to:
- Manage worries and racing thoughts
Gain concrete strategies for periods of waiting, uncertainty, and the many thoughts about what will happen next. - Process grief and disappointment
Make space for the losses and emotions that can follow a failed treatment attempt. - Regain control
Distinguish between what you can influence and what lies outside of your control. - Take care of your relationship
Understand your different reactions and maintain a connection with each other during treatment. - Set boundaries with your surroundings
Find effective ways to handle questions, advice, and expectations from family, friends, and colleagues. - Maintain a life alongside fertility treatment
Work toward ensuring the fertility process does not become the only measure of how life is going.

When Fertility Treatment Affects the Relationship
Involuntary childlessness and fertility treatment can place significant pressure on a relationship.
At Psykologhuset Enigma, you can come together for sessions where we can work on, among other things:
- how you talk about the fertility treatment
- different ways of managing grief and stress
- how you maintain closeness and connection
- sexuality and intimacy
- difficult decisions regarding treatment
- boundaries in relation to family and friends
- how to prevent the fertility project from overshadowing your entire relationship.
The goal is not necessarily for you to react in the same way, but for you to better understand and support each other.
