What is metacognitive therapy (MCT)?

Metacognitive therapy is a relatively new and scientifically documented form of treatment that differs from traditional cognitive therapy. Instead of focusing on the content of your thoughts (what you think), we focus on the process (how you think).

MCT is based on the understanding that mental health disorders are not caused by negative thoughts themselves, but by the way we react to them—metacognitive beliefs. These beliefs lead to maladaptive patterns such as rumination, worry, and constant hypervigilance, which maintain your suffering.

The goal of MCT is to teach you to:

  • Reduce the time you spend on persistent worrying and rumination.
  • Break the metacognitive beliefs that lead you to believe you must worry in order to be prepared.
  • Manage your attention and stop racing thoughts, so you can spend your energy on what is valuable in your life.

How a course of treatment works

Your course of treatment with one of our metacognitive psychologists in Hillerød is structured and targeted. We begin by mapping your specific thought patterns and the strategies you use when you become stressed or anxious.

Together, we create a tailored program that provides you with concrete, effective tools and techniques to gain control. This may include attention exercises, visualization techniques, and behavioral experiments that help you strengthen control over your thoughts.

MCT has proven particularly effective for the treatment of:

  • Anxiety disorders (Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder)
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • OCD (Obsessive-compulsive disorder)
Abuse and addiction

Frequently asked questions about metacognitive therapy

What is the difference between cognitive therapy and metacognitive therapy?2026-10-05T12:15:11+02:00

Cognitive therapy focuses on changing the content of your thoughts (are they true?). Metacognitive therapy focuses on changing your relationship to those thoughts (is it useful to spend time on them?). Both are effective, but MCT is particularly beneficial if you struggle with repetitive rumination and worry.

Can I use a doctor’s referral for metacognitive therapy?2026-10-05T12:14:57+02:00

Psykologhuset Enigma is a private clinic, and we do not accept doctor’s referrals under the Danish Public Health Insurance. However, you can often receive reimbursement from Sygeforsikringen Danmark or your private health insurance.

How long does an MCT course take?2026-10-05T12:14:39+02:00

MCT is often a short-term and targeted form of therapy. Although it varies, many clients experience noticeable improvement after 6-8 sessions. The course is always tailored in collaboration with you.
