What Is Depression?
Depression can manifest in many ways. It can change your thoughts, which were previously happy and positive, to being characterized by indifference, hopelessness, anger, or frustration. Your body, which might have used to feel fresh and energetic, may now seem heavy and tired. You may feel sad, despondent, and worthless. Even the smallest tasks—such as eating or taking a shower—can feel overwhelming. You might feel like sleeping all the time, or you may experience restless sleep or an inability to sleep at all. It is also possible that you may feel a lack of desire for life.
It is important to remember that you are not alone in these feelings. Depression is treatable, and you do not have to go through it alone. A conversation with a psychologist can be the first step toward feeling better. Psychologists are trained to help you understand and manage your emotions and thoughts. They can support you in finding new ways to navigate daily life and help you rediscover joy in the things that previously mattered to you.
Contact one of our psychologists today and start your path toward recovery. It may seem difficult at first, but it is also the first and most important step. You deserve help and support, and we are here to help you move forward.
Types of Depression
Depression can be divided into different types and levels of severity.
Types of depression according to the international diagnostic system ICD-11:
- Recurrent depressive disorder: Occurs when one repeatedly experiences periods of deep sadness and other depressive symptoms.
- Dysthymic disorder (Persistent depression): Characterized by a constant feeling of low mood lasting for at least two years, although symptoms may be milder than in major depression.
- Adjustment disorder with depressed mood: A condition where one feels deeply sad and low in response to a difficult life event, such as a loss or a major change.
- Bipolar disorder with depression: Includes periods of deep sadness alternating with episodes of intense energy and excitement.
It is also important to be aware that some people may not experience classic sadness, but instead become more irritable and angry with their surroundings. Increasing anger and frustration can be signs of hidden depression. If you are in doubt, do not hesitate to reach out.
The Different Degrees of Depression
Depression exists in various degrees of severity from mild to moderate and severe. Depression can occur in single episodes, be recurrent, or become chronic:
- Mild depression
Where you are still able to function in your daily life. - Moderate depression
Where work, family, and social life are strained. - Severe depression
Where even the most basic tasks seem insurmountable.
What Are the Causes of Depression?
Depression rarely arises from a single cause but often develops through a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. Heredity can play a role, but other elements such as stress and life burdens are also of great importance. Increased vulnerability, which can stem from an insecure upbringing or a tendency to worry, can make some individuals more susceptible to depression.
Past experiences such as abuse or neglect can also contribute to the risk of depression later in life. Life changes such as divorce, job loss, or serious illness can trigger or worsen depression. Physical illnesses and certain types of medication can also have depression as a side effect.
Depression can affect people regardless of age, gender, or background.
Typical Risk Factors for Depression:
- Challenges in family, romantic, friendship, or work-related relationships
- Sensitive or anxious personality
- Childhood neglect, such as lack of care or experiences of abuse
- Social vulnerability
- Traumatic experiences such as violence, abuse, bullying, accidents, death, or serious illness in the family
- Acute crises and grief
- Separation or divorce
- Lack of close relationships and confidential bonds
- Long-term or serious physical illness
- Other mental health disorders such as anxiety or psychosis
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Depression among close relatives
- Fear of not being good enough or performing adequately
- Hormonal changes
What Are the Benefits of Depression Treatment with a Psychologist?
Psychological therapy can open the door to finding a way out of depression. Here, you have the opportunity to regain a sense of control over your life, which will gradually ease the hopelessness and bring meaning back to your existence. In therapy, we work with your current depressive symptoms, the underlying causes, and the factors that maintain the depression.
Through conversations and exercises, you will experience hope returning and your sense of control becoming stronger. We go in-depth with the causes behind your depression and identify the mechanisms that sustain it. With a structured treatment plan, you learn tools to manage symptoms and prevent relapse.
Therapy reduces both the discomfort and the duration of a depression and decreases the risk of a new depressive period occurring. It is important to work with the deeper causes of depression to achieve long-term recovery.
Therapy can help you remove negative thought patterns at the root and create preventive strategies against future episodes. Through this process, you will gain deeper insight into yourself and your patterns, so that the depression either disappears completely or can be managed effectively should it return.
Through dialogue, we support you in understanding the problem in depth, allowing you to create new ways of handling previously experienced stagnation.
